Serving the Muslim community across the Kimberley region.
The Kimberley Islamic Association was established in January 2025 in Broome to represent the Muslims in various communities of the Kimberley region in North Western Australia. Our committee is made of a diverse group of muslim brothers and sisters who are passionate about supporting the growth of the Association in the Kimberley. We are a registered charity under he Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission.
Islam is no stranger to Broome or the Kimberley region, dating back to the late 1800s through pearl divers coming from South East Asia and the nomadic Afghan Camaleers. Broome previously had a mosque which is believed to have been destroyed in a cyclone or during WW2 and still has a Muslim Cemetery. Muslims have played a great part in establishing Broome's pearl industry, working primarily as divers. Muslims struggle to settle in rural communities around Australia as there are no established facilities supporting the Muslim community. The Kimberley Islamic Association is hoping to grow to eventually build a mosque to support the ever growing needs of the Muslim community. InshaAllah, we will start small and build up from there to bring back Islam to the region. Read more about the organisation and history of Muslims in the Kimberley here.
